I attended an information session for students about finding agents to support our creative ventures. The men photographed were actively engaged in the conversation and one was even taking notes.
I went to iLab, a computer lab for Howard University students, to study and complete some assignments and looked up to see her and decided to capture it. Most of the times if you actually want to get work done, iLab is not the place to be.
I was walking down U St and saw these women gathered together, some are not pictured, laughing and enjoying each other’s company. Here you see the ending of their conversation as they part ways.
From this photo, the woman looks kind of angry, kind of confused as to what’s going on. Probably because she thought I was taking a picture of her, which I was.
I watched this couple from afar as they peeked through the glass window, staring at goods in the store. Something had caught their eye, they shared a glance, and laughed together, happily.
Interest, boredom, excitement, awkwardness, and amusement are the words that I chose for this photo assignment. At first I didn’t know that’s what we were doing so I wish I would’ve chosen better words that would allow for an easier or common capture. My experience doing this made me pay more attention to the people around me so I could get pure reactions of their day. I wasn’t nervous with taking pictures of random people or getting in their face because I am used to doing so. I am a photographer and have to photograph people all the time, sometimes I am familiar with them and sometimes they are strangers, so it did not scare me to go out and complete this assignment.
For interest, I was in the Howard University School of Communications with students who were attending a presentation put on by a creative agency. They were hoping to get students interested in developing their work, getting things copyrighted, and letting in more opportunities for after graduation. I didn’t even think to take pictures here until I changed my location from the back to the front and saw these gentlemen. I figured it was the perfect picture to capture interest because they were very attentive to the conversation.
Boredom was the easiest because college students are always bored and not doing their homework or paying attention during class. This picture was taken on the fly in iLab where most HU students know that usually more fun is had than work is done. People also take the opportunity to sleep, eat, scroll through their phones, or watch Netflix. I wish I would’ve gotten their reactions just a little bit earlier as it was an entire group of women who were happy to see each other. My photo for awkwardness actually makes me laugh when I look at it because the subject looks really confused as to what’s going on. You could also say she slightly looks angry, not at me but maybe something she just experienced. I could probably change the word to angry or confused and I think the photo would still work. The story behind amusement is really cute as the couple you see pictured were walking and stopped because they saw something interesting through the store window. They were smiling, laughing, and pointing at something they saw in Salt and Sundry, which I learned is a store that sells home accessories.
For most of the assignment I realized I could’ve been more intentional and even gotten closer to my subject so that you could clearly see the reactions I was trying to capture.
